The Story Behind Back-A-Line

The story behind the Back-A-Line belt is a very personal one. In 1991, founder Bill Landtbom was involved in a rear-end automobile accident, rupturing one spinal disk and herniating another. In a few days the pain in his leg was so intense that he went to a doctor who ordered an MRI scan. They told him that he had "the biggest rupture" they had ever seen in someone still walking.

Two years later, in order to close the insurance case, Bill was scheduled for surgery and underwent another MRI in preparation. Just before he was placed under anethesia, the doctor walked in with the MRI results and halted the procedure, proclaiming that Bill's back had healed itself -- something this doctor had never seen in 25 years of practice. Bill went home without surgery.

What happened in those intervening two years? The Back-A-Line belt!

The way Bill puts it, "I had tried all kinds of things to ease the extreme pain radiating down my leg. I discovered that a firm surface, pressed against my back, worked best. Since my back was curved, I figured that the support should be curved also. I took a curved piece of Styrofoam, sewed it into a fabric belt, and secured it around my waist. I wore it everyday for two years, and slowly my back improved to the point where I could ski and golf again -- not to mention walk without discomfort."

Today, Back-A-Line manufactures an advanced version of the back support belt originally developed by Bill. Made of high-quality materials, the Back-A-Line belt has garnered praise from national medical and ergonomic professionals, such as orthopedists, osteopaths, chiropractors, and ergonomists. In addition, Bill has also developed versions of his belt to help people with different types of back pain or conditions.

Looking back, Bill says that now he'd like to thank the person who ran into him, because that single accident has led to a revolution in treating back pain. For Bill Landtbom, accident truly is the mother of invention!
